Matariki is celebrated in Aotearoa New Zealand when the constellation widely known as Pleiades rises above the horizon in midwinter. For Māori this marks the start of the new year and the brightness of the stars is traditionally used as an indicator of the coming season’s crop. The Matariki stars are not a constellation, but instead a star cluster.
