Whitebait -Inanga Necklace

 This necklace features a silver whitebait or Inanga suspended between light green nylon braid and fastened with a silver button at the back. NZ jeweller Vaune Mason has crafted this piece to reflect on the preciousness of NZ waterways, and the smaller species which are an important part of both the NZ fauna, but also the cultural way of life of many New Zealanders. And, of course, celebrates the beauty of the fish itself.

The Inanga is the young of  the galaxid family, which are so-named for the small black spots visible in their silver-ish glass-like bodies, reminiscent of a galaxy of stars. The fish of the galaxid family are among the many species of juvenile fish which make up the famous whitebait, and which are a threatened species in NZ rivers.

About the artist: Vaune Mason is based on the Kāpiti coast. Her detailed carved animals are most often reproduced in glowing bronze, silver and gold, and every now and then, in recycled native timbers, stone or bone. Vaune also loves to make beautiful be-jewelled pieces that look worthy of a treasure hunters' hoard. Her inspiration comes from the things that surround her in nature. Her style is strong, archaic and feminine.
